Sidney L. Jackson was born on Sept. 13, 1914, in Brooklyn, New York. He received an A.B. in History and an M.A. in the Teaching of History from Columbia University and completed a Ph. D. in the History of American Education in 1941. Jackson served in the United States Army Signal Corps during World War II, and then after the war worked as a freelance research writer for organizations and individuals such as the American National Red Cross and Benjamin Sonnenbert.
